CLIFFORD!!! Clifford is one durable 20 pound package – he was born in 1993 so he’s over 16 years old (closing in on the equivalent of 100 years old for a person). He’s been around the world some too. His owners, John and Amy Knecht of Mapleton, MN told me that his wife’s sister heard some puppies crying under their porch during a thunderstorm while living in Nebraska. She investigated and found Clifford with his brothers and sisters in a bag that had been thrown under their porch. Luckily for the puppies, John’s sister took them in and cared for them. Clifford came to live with John and Amy when Clifford was 5 years old. Their two year old daughter named him after Clifford the Big Red Dog – even though Clifford is not red. I first met Clifford a few years ago and remember John talking about going for long walks with him on the Sakata trail in Mankato. Clifford was at All Pets Clinic for his annual checkup recently and his senior blood profile was completely normal – amazing! Dogs don’t live to be his age by accident; somebody (ie. John and Amy) have been taking really good care of him. Today John tells me Clifford isn’t as keen for the really long walks as he used to be, but he still runs around in circles like crazy when he’s happy! When he is at our clinic he is the picture of mature patience – sitting quietly with dignity until the exam, poking, and prodding is finished. At his last visit, when I took him off the exam room table he immediately wagged his tail a couple of times and headed for the door as if to say “well, one more of those out of the way, no problem!” We have a number of patients who have really gotten up there in years. Clifford represents that age group of pets pretty well, and so we think he richly deserves to be All Pet’s June Pet of the Month! P.S. – look at the words on Clifford’s leash in his pictures!
