SADIE!!!

The week after 9/11 James Thomas got his dog. James was 9 years old, lived in Mapleton, MN and was suffering from leukemia. A woman from Zumbrota, MN ran a marathon for leukemia in Hawaii in James honor, and afterward asked him what he would like most in the world. His response – he wanted a dog! Well, she knew a family who had a young Golden Retriever, and this family had also recently had a son. Sadie was about a year old then and was too rambunctious to have around a baby, so Sadie was given to James. What a story – and of course it was a great match, James and Sadie developed an incredibly strong bond and have enjoyed all of the years since. James is now 17 years old and has survived leukemia.

In late January of this year, James’ Mom brought Sadie to All Pets because she had suddenly stopped eating and was somewhat lethargic. It seems impossible that lightning could strike the same family twice but several tests confirmed – Sadie had lymphoid leukemia.

Dr. Klein discussed several options with the Thomas family, and they decided to initiate chemotherapy and do what they could for Sadie for as long as she has a good quality of life. James’ Mom brings her to All Pets every week for blood work and her chemotherapy treatments. James and his family are very involved with Sadie’s treatment. Because of James illness they are very familiar with names like Elspar, Vincristine, Cytoxin, and Adriamycin – all chemotherapeutic medications that James himself received and that Sadie is now receiving. James came to the clinic to learn how to give injections so that when Sadie experiences some of the side effects from chemo he can talk things over with Dr. Klein and give the appropriate relief quickly. Sadie’s chemotherapy will continue for 25 weeks after which we’ll re-evaluate the best plan to move forward.

After the first chemo treatment Sadie started eating and perked up. She has had a couple of down days, but her health has improved dramatically since starting the treatment. She is a great dog to work with – she is always wagging her tail and holds very still when the technicians draw blood or place her catheters.

At this time Sadie is living a great quality of life, and as long as that continues we know the Thomas family will do whatever they can to help her out! The efforts of James and his family have really helped her. We all want Sadie to keep coming in wagging her tail for a long time!
