PET OF THE MONTH (If you have a special story you would like to share with us about your pets, please feel free to call us at 507-524-3748 e-mail us at allpets@hickorytech.net.)
REMINGTON!!! Remington loves veggies! He eats all kinds of vegetables but especially enjoys standing by the garden while his owner Sally Remington picks string beans - he eats the ones that she tosses to him and every so often he steals an extra one right off the plant! It's just one of the many ways that he has become part of the Remington family. Remington is a Cocker-Bichon, lives with his owners in Wells, MN, and was born in 2006. He is white and soft and wiggles when he's happy or nervous. Al and Sally Remington did not have a dog in January 2006 when Al was diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer that is often fatal. Over the next couple of months Sally realized that it would be good to have another companion around the house, and they spent quite a bit of time thinking about what kind of dog they might want. They eventually found Remington and brought him home when he was 8 weeks old. At the time the doctor's prognosis for Al was very poor, and Sally asked him if he minded if they called their new puppy "Remington", so that she could continue to have a Remington in her life for many years. Sometimes they call him "Remy" for short. We all know what a bundle of energy that a puppy can be! Al became very sick and Sally was still working, so sometimes at the end of the day her energy level was low enough to make a walk with Remington more of an event than she needed. So she asked Al if he would mind taking him out a little. It started slowly - at first Al was so weak he could barely walk at all - but pretty soon they were up to walking a half a block, then a full block. And with those walks something amazing happened. Al's attitude and outlook on things started improving. Just like the length of the walks the change started slowly and increased progressively. Al's cancer was still there, but Remington helped him to keep moving, keep going, deal with the ongoing health decisions, and live life more fully. Al, Sally, and Remington are still together. The degree to which I see the positive value that pets bring to their families is a daily experience for me. But Remington's role is such a combination of love, rascal, and functionality that I don't really know how to describe it. The closest I can come is to relate Sally's description of the typical end of each day for them. By early evening Al gets very tired. Before going to bed he sits in his chair and plays with Remington. Then Al gets settled into bed and Sally and Remington say good night. Remington jumps on the bed and gives Al a bunch of doggie kisses. Al says "OK enough is enough!" Sally tells Remington "OK Remy, it's time to let Al go to sleep". I think that Remington definitely deserves to be the August Pet of the Month. Dr. Tim Klein
