Hello from All Pets Clinic!

Spring, 2010

Wow it's nice that winter is in the rear view mirror! We have some staffing updates to tell you - Dr. Stone had a beautiful baby girl and has been back at All Pets since February. She works three days each week which has given Dr. Klein more of a chance to see his family. Also, Michelle is getting married in May, so she's been very busy getting things ready! No other big announcements - just remember that if you have any questions don't hesitate to call us, that's what we are here for!

Things to Consider
Although most of our clients make appointments and ask questions via the phone, quite a few are using e-mail to do these things at hours that are more convenient for them, which is just fine with us! Our e-mail address is allpets@hickorytech.net
All Pets offers emergency after hours care for all of our patients. Just call our regular clinic phone number (507) 524-3748, after hours your message will be forwarded to Dr. Klein's cell phone. Leave a message and he will call you back, usually within a few minutes.
Going on vacation? We board pets - call to reserve a hotel room!
We post upcoming events, price specials, health tips, Pet of the Month, and information that is valuable for your pet's health on our web page! Check it out at www.allpetsvet.org.
Many of our clients are having us Microchip their pets in case they are lost or stolen. We have changed programs, the microchip program we now use saves our clients money - ask us about it. This easy procedure can be done at the time of vaccination and costs only $39.99.
Ask us for our "Buyer Beware" informational sheet before spending money on poor performing health products, or check it out on our web page under the "Health Tips" link.

Groom Groom!!
Spring is time for a haircut! Call us if you need your pet groomed or bathed.

Annual Wellness Clinic - our most popular annual event!
April 12 through May 1.
Check our web page or call to find out the dates that we are open evenings or Saturdays.
10% off all Wellness related services and products, including vaccinations, senior blood tests, heartworm / Lyme tests, and heartworm/flea/tick prevention products.

When should I call the Vet Clinic? It's not always easy to know! When clients call we help them decide if they need to bring their pets in. Call anytime you have a question, but contact us for sure if:
Your pet has not eaten for 24 hours, or has reduced appetite for 48 hours.
" Your pet has vomited 3 times today, or has vomited 2 days in a row regardless of frequency.
" Your pet has diarrhea for 24 hours.
Your pet has been lethargic for 24 hours, or is getting more lethargic as the day goes on.
Your pet is not able to put weight on a foot (call right away), or has been limping mildly for 24 hours.
" Your pet strains to go to the bathroom.
Your pet has any cut/scrape/or skin ailment that they are licking or scratching.
Your pet has a fever above 102 (you can check this at home with a rectal thermometer)!
Remember, calling early in the day saves you money and gives us more time to solve your pet's health problem!

Products Checklist - ask us which products best fit your pet's needs:
Dogs
Heartgard (heartworm and worms)
Frontline (fleas and ticks)
Sentinel (heartworm, worms, and fleas)
Cats
Revolution or Advantage Multi (ear mites, fleas, worms)
Acarexx (ear mites)
Strongid (worms)

Health Risks - below are several health risks that could affect your pet or your family.
Lyme disease
- Spread by Deer Ticks, affects both pets and people. The heavy snow this winter actually insulated the ticks, they are out already. Last year we used a test that checked for Heartworm disease and also checked for Lyme disease.
- With that test we found more Lyme positive dogs last year than Heartworm positive dogs!!!
- Many of the dogs that tested positive for Lyme disease had a lifestyle that you would expect exposure to ticks. But we also had positives on dogs that only visited their lawns.
- Our recommendation - that all of our patients be tested annually for Lyme disease, see the product checklist above for tick products!

Fleas - we've been seeing them too - on dogs and cats!
-
80% of flea exposure comes from your lawn - not from other pets!
- Fleas jump off the stray animal making a midnight visit to the places on your lawn where your pet did his "business", jump onto your pet when you let him out the next day, and then off your pet onto your carpet where they lay thousands of eggs each day.
- Since the life cycle of the flea is 3 weeks, and you never kill all of the fleas with one house treatment, you are guaranteed to have fleas in your house for 3, 6, sometimes more than 9 weeks.
- Fleas prefer to bite pets, but will also bite family members.
- Our recommendation - protect your dog, cat, and family from fleas- see the product checklist above!

Worms - some worm eggs last for 20 years on cement or dirt. If a stray dog or cat has been on your lawn in that amount of time, guess what you or your pet can easily carry into the house on your shoes?
-
Dogs and Cats roundworms and hookworms can affect people as well as your pet.
-The "poop" that contains worm eggs can be carried into the house on the bottom of our shoes it's a good idea to worm all dogs and cats monthly (even when kept inside).
-Our recommendation - worm outdoor pets monthly and indoor pets quarterly, see the product checklist above!

Let us know if you have any questions, we're looking forward to seeing you!! Thanks for coming to All Pets!

Dr. Klein, Dr. Stone, Tracy, Jo, Michelle, and Lisa.
