SURGICAL

All Pets provides a wide range of surgical procedures for its patients. We perform all of the elective surgeries (spays, neuters, etc.). Many of our clients express surprise to learn of the range of non-elective surgeries available here – abdominal surgeries involving the intestines, bladder, and other organs; orthopedic surgeries to repair fractured bones; knee surgeries to repair torn cruciate ligaments and other joint disorders; and more.

During surgery at All Pets, safety is first. We utilize a “multi modal” approach to anesthesia, which means that each patient receives between two and four different anesthetics. By using more than one anesthetic we can keep the dose of each anesthetic lower which is safer for our patient. Patients are intubated and placed on a gas anesthetic machine with monitors that help us track vital information during surgery. Just like on the TV show “ER” our patients receive a surgical scrub at the surgery site, we use sterilized instrument packs, and sterile drapes during surgery. A surgery technician is assisting the surgeon at all times to help keep the time in surgery to a minimum for each client.

All clients are given the opportunity to choose for their pet a pre-surgical profile (tests the function of the organs that filter the anesthetics from the patient’s body, if there are problems with those organs then they do not filter the anesthetic out of the body as fast as the “average” patient which can result in over-dosing of anesthetics) and usage of the Radio-wave surgical scalpel (reduces pain, hemorrhage, and surgical time – see “Laser and Radio-wave Surgery” under advanced services in our web page).

Because surgical procedures can result in discomfort for our patients, the doctors and staff at All Pets are huge proponents of utilizing pain medication during and after surgery. Just as with people, minimizing pain is best achieved by getting pain meds on board before the pain starts instead of after. Accomplishing this starts with the use of pain relieving premeds before surgery and continuing after the surgery. We recommend medications to minimize pain be taken home and given for several days post surgery, and we have been very pleased with the improved comfort of our patients. We would certainly want to minimize pain if we had surgery, and we recommend the same for our patients.

We try to keep our surgical services as economical as possible without cutting corners on quality or safety for our patients. That applies to both elective and non-elective surgical procedures. As with every other aspect of our clinic, we are honored that our clients bring their pet to us, and we want to do all we can to make sure that their experience is as pain free and stress free as possible.
