2011 Spring Newsletter

Wow it's been a long winter! Sunshine and 75 degrees are just around the corner!! We have a couple of things to report that have taken place at All Pets since our last newsletter.

Stephanie Plamann is a vet tech student from St. Peter who will be interning with us from April to June.

Also, we have expanded our facility, adding a new kennel / boarding area. This is a very nice place for your pet to spend a few days of R&R while you are on vacation! You can see a video tour of it on our web page!

In addition to our Annual Wellness Clinic, we've expanded the 10% discount on all heartworm/flea/tick products to the first Wednesday of each month (Open until 7 PM also), all year around!

Things to Consider
We still answer the phone, but a lot of our clients are now using e-mail to make appointments. We also communicate with clients via facebook, and check out the cool Videos of us on our web page - just promise not to laugh at us! Clients who send us their e-mail get additional health updates from us and have access to a Pet Portal where they can check their pet's vaccination status and other things anytime - so send us your e-mail. We will soon also utilize twitter and have a blog!
Our e-mail address is allpets@hickorytech.net and our web page is www.allpetsvet.org

Groom Groom!!
Spring is time for a haircut! Call us if you need your pet groomed or bathed.

Annual Wellness Clinic - our most popular annual event!
April 25 through May 7, by appointment. Check our web page or call to find out the dates that we are open evenings or Saturdays. 10% off all Wellness related services and products, including vaccinations, senior blood tests, heartworm / Lyme tests, and heartworm/flea/tick prevention products.

The following programs are aimed to help you save money while giving your pet the great care that he or she deserves. Contact us for more details.

1. Puppy / Kitten Package (starts April 1 2011)
Purchase this package and your new little pal will get 25% off on their 8, 12, and 16 week visits (including all Vaccinations, Exams, Heartgard, Frontline, Fecal Checks, and their spay or neuter surgery).
Up to $100 or more in savings for puppies and kittens
We allow you to pay ½ up front and ½ one month later.

2. Senior Package (starts April 1, 2011)
We see too many patients (dogs and cats) who suffer from arthritic pain that often begins by around 6 years of age. Delaying the onset of arthritic pain, and then minimizing that pain for all the rest of your pet's years will dramatically improve his or her quality of life. Many pets go without proper arthritic pain management because of the expense; this package helps make it more affordable.
We recommend PST treatments (a non-medication, anti-pain treatment) beginning at 6 years of age to delay the onset of arthritic pain, and then medications as needed and tailored to your pet's needs.
Purchase this package ($175 for dogs, $155 for cats) and the pet who has been with your family for years will get 10% off all emergency Diagnostics (blood tests, x-rays, etc.), plus one year of PST treatments free, plus 25% off all of the other tools in our "anti - pain toolbox" including Metacam, Tramadol, Gabapentin, Phycox, Dasquin (glucosamine/chondroiten), Fatty Acid Supplements, and J/d Prescription Diet Food
We allow you to pay ½ up front and ½ one month later.

3. 10% off all of our Flea, Tick, and Heartworm products the first Wednesday of every month all year around AND we are open until 7 PM!

4. 5% senior discount

5. Our Gasoline Discount - $10 off any service invoice over $100 when you have a 15 mile or more drive to get to us!

It seems like reading about recommendations to vaccinate and protect pets (and us!) from parasites might get a little … well … boring. So here are some ….

Practical Observations of Pet Care"
The only Parvo infected dogs that we see are ones who are not current on their distemper/parvo vaccinations.
Families who are being bit by fleas in their house often have the same three comments - "this is sooo gross" and "ridding the house of fleas is sooo expensive" and "we never had fleas before so we didn't think we needed to put flea/tick protection on our pets!"
Every person in the history of the world who has developed signs of rabies has died. The chance of a pet getting rabies and giving it to your family or friends is small, but that small chance is why the government requires all pets are vaccinated.
Kids follow their dog everywhere, including to the places where ticks live, so when we have a dog that tests positive for Lyme disease, and explain to the owner that their kids may also be being exposed, we feel like we are helping that owner protect their kids from getting Lyme disease.
It takes a lot of food for puppies and kittens that are growing. Guess what happens when they stop growing but keep eating the same amount of food? You guessed it; they gain "fat" weight! Yes we should feed less after spaying or neutering our pet, but since those surgeries occur near the end of their growth phase, the surgery is often unfairly blamed for the all of the "fat" weight gain.
Brushing your pet's teeth gets only the debris that has accumulated in the last 24-48 hours (tarter forms after that which brushing will not remove). So brushing less frequently than every other day has minimal effectiveness. A video on our web page shows how to train your pet for brushing.
In the exam room, clients who have Googled their pet's condition tend to have good questions and we have a good discussion. However, due to Google searches we've also seen more patients who are coming to the office 4-7 days after becoming sick instead of 1-2 days, resulting in additional treatments needed - those Google searches are very expensive for the owner.
There is a big difference in safety and effectiveness of products. Just because it is a liquid and is applied like Frontline or Revolution does not mean it will prevent fleas as well as those products. The end results of those products are expensive!

Commonly heard in our exam room … "My indoor cat got upper respiratory virus infection from my clothes after I pet the neighbor's infected outdoor cat???", "My indoor dog got fleas from my clothes after I pet the neighbor's dog??
My indoor cat got worms from my shoes after stepping in cat poop a couple blocks from home??!!" Major yuck factor! Indoor pets are at risk of disease and parasites just like outdoor pets.
Confucius says, a dog without arthritic pain is not stiff when getting up. A dog that is stiff getting up is in pain.
